Chris Burch Develops the Nihiwatu Five-Star Resort in Indonesia

In 2012, an exciting deal was just about to go down in the tropical Sumba islands of Indonesia near Bali. Barely four years after the investor duo of Chris Burch and James McBride acquired a rundown hostel on the beautiful Indonesian coast, then the place transformed into the world’s official number one hotel and resort. In the course of his shining entrepreneurial career, Chris has been involved mega investment projects, mostly in the fashion industry and the real estate.

Business Insider’s Take

According to Business Insider, the property cost $30M to refurbish and redo. The exact amount paid to the American couple who used to own the place was not made public. The partners named the resort, Nihiwatu and it was named as 2016’s number one five-star hotel and resort by Travel + Leisure. Check here to read the full interview.

27 Villas on Nihiwatu

Back in 2015, Chris Burch was quoted by the Business Jet Traveler saying how he bought the property for his kids. He went ahead to mention how he intended to transform the idyllic spot into a conservation center. He summed up the interview by remarking how shocked he was that Nihiwatu turned out to be better than he had envisioned. That was a rare outcome because Chris says how he’s used to things turning out worse than expected.

The Raja Mendaka Villa

Then, there was the Wall Street Journal which gave the details of the resort. The hotel is comprised of 27 privately-held villas complete with all the modern amenities you expect to find in a five-star hotel. Chris is said to be a globe-trotter of epic proportions. He likes to split his time living in his Hamptons house, in his Miami mansion and at his private villas at Nihiwatu, the Raja Mendaka. Nihiwatu is an Indonesian word with the English equivalent a mortar stone. This popular tourist destination goes by the nickname, ‘the edge of the wilderness’, owing to its awe-inspiring beauty.

Chris Burch has always had a soft spot for helping out the needy individuals in the communities he lives and works. Nihiwatu is no different. He’s started a philanthropic organization which doles out vast sums of money to support and run several conservation agendas in the island. Asides, thanks to his multi-million dollar project, the residents of the Sumba Island have now found a steady employer who pays them right and who also contributes to the welfare of the local communities.
